In high school, Power also played basketball and volleyball, but his true passion outside of the rink is box lacrosse, which he played until he was 15 years old.
“The one thing most people don’t know about me,” Power adds before disclosing the closest thing to a boast he’ll ever utter: “I won three national championships in lacrosse.”
Power believes that box lacrosse helps him grasp space — finding ways to get open, finding the open teammate — which relates to his blue line play. Power’s attacking ability isn’t very impressive, and he’s not particularly physical. He’s just reliable, seldom makes a mistake, and has a good understanding of the game.
“I believe my hockey sense is the greatest aspect of my game,” Power remarked. “Being able to think about the game at a high level is the most enjoyable aspect.”

Power was selected by the Chicago Steel of the USHL in 2015, but the club decided to give him a year in Canadian juniors before bringing him over. When Power arrived at training camp, everything changed.
“His foot speed wasn’t where it needed to be, and he needed to fix up certain things,” said Ryan Hardy, the Steel’s general manager at the time. “But he was a 6-foot-4 15-year-old who never gave the puck away, had a tremendous feel for the game, and exuded confidence. ‘Oh, gosh, we have to do everything to recruit this kid,’ we said.”
According to Hardy, power “scuffled” at first. He finally got his stride around Thanksgiving or Christmas.
“He was arguably the greatest defender we had by the playoffs,” Hardy said. “At night, he was playing 22, 24 minutes.”

Power attributes his humility to his parents. The first call he makes after every game is to his father. Power enrolled at Michigan after two years in Chicago. It was difficult for him to have his first college experience during the epidemic, which is one of the reasons he’s considering returning to Michigan as a sophomore. Power spent the most of his spare time with teammates in off-campus homes.
“I’ve just heard tales of how it used to be,” Power added. “It’s sort of a bummer that it was my first encounter, but it’s still been incredible.”

“I try to analyze any of the best D-men in the NHL,” Power said. “And take bits and pieces of their game and put them in mine.”

But, for someone so young and so large, his hockey knowledge, drive to compete, and skill level are really remarkable.”
According to Hardy, there’s more to Power than meets the eye.
“What makes him unique is that he is very modest while still being quite motivated,” Hardy added. “He can be coached. He’s constantly on the lookout for new knowledge. He never believes he is invincible. He just wants more and more so that he may learn and improve, and eventually become great. When you’re in that state of mind, what do you do? This is Owen Power’s first draft. I don’t believe many people realize how talented he is.”
